Touching Spirit Bear" is about a protagonist named Cole Matthews. He is a troubled teenager that gets in trouble for injuring and harassing a person by the name of Peter Driscal. He does this because Peter told on him. His offenses were serious, so he was facing a lot of jail time. His parole officer believes that Cole can change and he doesn't deserve this so instead of sending him to jail he gets him into a program that they call Circle Justice. Cole has become more confident and courageous in the book by changing from naughty to loyal.
Cole becomes a better person throughout the book by becoming more confident and courageous. He was making bad decisions for himself, and while he experiences all of the ups and downs in this program, he grows as a person. In one scene of the book, in the text it states Cole burned a cabin down (chapter3 page 18). This shows that Cole is not making the right decisions, because he acts out and does something drastic. Later in the same scene the text states Cole wanted revenge(chapter 3 page 20) while expressing his emotions which tells the readers that he knows what he did was wrong and deep down he wants to do better and change. In another scene of the book the text states Cole decides to make his favorite dinner for everyone (chapter 26 pg 119). This shows that he has changed and become loyal. He shows that he cares about others and wants to have joy in his life, he worked hard and showed that he respected others. Another way that shows Cole's improvements is when he hugs his mom.(chapter 15 page 75) He is showing her that he cares and that he has changed into a better person.
