Read the excerpt from "On Becoming an Inventor" by Dean Kamen.

My next challenge was that I wanted to make things out of metal, so I became interested in how to use a lathe, a milling machine, and so on. I went to buy this new equipment I thought I'd need and met a man who had a machine shop of his own who was about to retire and move to Florida. He allowed me to visit him after school and on weekends to observe how he used all his tools. I was hooked. When he retired I bought not only all his big equipment but all his little toolboxes as well--they were treasures!

I decided to put his entire machine shop in our basement, but there were two problems... One, his shop wouldn't fit in our basement, and two, there was no way the lathe, weighing fifteen hundred pounds, and the milling machine, weighing two thousand pounds, could be carried into the basement. I solved this problem by hiring a contractor to dig a large hole, break open a wall of the basement, enclose the addition with concrete, and add a roof that could be used for building an outside deck to the house. I also enlarged my mother's kitchen and pantry. I now had the entire machine shop in our basement. At the time I was making enough money from my electronic devices to pay for all of this.

Which detail best supports Kamen’s opinion that he was hooked on making things out of metal?

He allowed me to visit him after school and on weekends to observe how he used all his tools.

Based on the passage, what conflict does the little mermaid face?
A. The little mermaid is in the middle of a shipwreck and needs to save her own life.
B. The little mermaid wants to save the life of the drowning human prince in the ocean. C. The little mermaid is worried that the prince will reach her father’s palace before her. D. The little mermaid is in a hurry to get to her father’s palace and escape the shipwreck.
The Little Mermaid
by Hans Christian Andersen (excerpt)

The little mermaid now perceived that the crew was in danger; even she was obliged to be careful, to avoid the beams and planks of the wreck which lay scattered on the water. At one moment it was pitch dark so that she could not see a single object, but when a flash of lightning came it revealed the whole scene; she could see everyone who had been on board except the prince. When the ship parted, she had seen him sink into the deep waves, and she was glad, for she thought he would now be with her. Then she remembered that human beings could not live in the water, so that when he got down to her father's palace he would certainly be quite dead.

No, he must not die! So she swam about among the beams and planks which strewed the surface of the sea, forgetting that they could crush her to pieces. Diving deep under the dark waters, rising and falling with the waves, she at length managed to reach the young prince, who was fast losing the power to swim in that stormy sea. His limbs were failing him, his beautiful eyes were closed, and he would have died had not the little mermaid come to his assistance. She held his head above the water and let the waves carry them where they would.

There’s a stereotype that millennials are lazy and expect everything to be handed to them. In my experience, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

I cannot speak for all millennials, but I am optimistic about my future. Think about it: I have my whole life ahead of me. I enjoy my current job and am looking forward to building on my experience to further my career. What’s not to like about this sense of freedom and exploration?

Of course, challenges lay ahead of me. Some will come faster than others.

Like many graduates, student loans are hanging over my head. I’m glad for the six-month grace period after graduation. There are also several different repayment plans available for federal loans. However, paying off these student loans will still impact my financial future. Like many Americans, I want to eventually buy my own house. That may be more difficult considering the amount of debt I have taken on to gain a good education.

The way ahead for me, as well as for others in my generation, is getting a job and saving. I am fortunate to have a solid job in journalism, my industry. But, for millennials, finding a decent job doesn’t automatically guarantee an opportunity to save a lot of money. With the rising cost of living, along with other expenses like a phone plan and Internet access, it is getting harder to save consistently. This should get easier as my career progresses, but I am currently pinching pennies. Those student loans are waiting for me.

Fast-changing economy

The way ahead also involves being able to swim in a fast-changing economy, one that is digital, rewards knowledge in science, technology, engineering, and math. It is also hyper-competitive. Today’s work force — especially in media — is required to have a broader range of skills than past generations.

The way ahead also involves being able to swim in a fast-changing economy, one that is digital, rewards knowledge in science, technology, engineering, and math. It is also hyper-competitive.

Having a plethora of digital skills can be a big plus on your resume. Many jobs require computer, Internet and social media literacy. In journalism, there is also an increasing demand for data reporting. With advancing technology, there is a higher demand for employees not just with basic technology skills, but also with more technical and advanced coding knowledge or deep interest and insight in social media branding and audience-targeting.

Journalism is indicative of these big changes. Automation and technological advances do take away jobs, yet those same technologies give us more opportunities. Automating stories covering straight-forward subjects like quarterly earnings reports frees up a skilled reporter to focus on a more complicated, in-depth story.

With advancing technology, there is a higher demand for employees not just with basic technology skills, but also with more technical and advanced coding knowledge or deep interest and insight in social media branding and audience-targeting.

SMU prepared me for this changing industry, which is what we need schools and colleges doing. Colleges and high schools need to teach students to be versatile and think fast on their feet. Far beyond journalism, the economy requires people who can innovate and solve problems.

Read this excerpt adapted from “A Brave Lad.” This story originally appeared in Chatterbox, a book of stories edited by J. Erskine Clarke.

Which line from the story supports the idea that Fred is a courageous boy?

It was Saturday afternoon when the boys of Wedderburn School went off as usual to swim their boats on a beautiful lake. Fred Langton had a new boat, which his grandfather had sent to him as a birthday present. It was a larger and better-constructed boat than any of the others. Each boy was, of course, eager that his own boat should win the race. Although all the boys admired Fred's boat and wished that they could have had one as good, they felt no grudge towards Fred himself. In fact, he was a general favorite in the school. He was kind-hearted, unselfish, and always willing to give anything that he had to his companions.

“I tell you,” said Bill Cowan to his own particular chum, Joe Morris, “that boat of Fred's will beat ours all hollow! I wish I had one as good!”

“Well, suppose it does win,” replied Joe Morris, “I shall not grudge it to him, for Fred is no sneak; he is out-and-out the jolliest fellow in Wedderburn School.”

“So he is,” said Bill Cowan, “and no mistake about it. Well, here we are at the lake, and now for some fun.”

On this particular Saturday, however, Fred was going to become famous in quite another way. The little boats were all in full sail, and the schoolboys were shouting with glee at the fun. Suddenly a fox-terrier took it into his head to chase the boats and show that he could swim as well as they could. Poor dog! It was quite true that he could swim. Unfortunately he got caught among weeds. He began struggling in the water and barking for help.

“Oh, I say, I can't stand this!” cried Fred Langton; “he will be drowned. I must go in and fetch him out!”

“No, no!” cried Bill Cowan; “the lake is quite deep just at that place.”

“Yes, I know it's deep,” added Joe Morris, “and, besides, you can't swim, Fred; don't be silly. Who cares for a dog being drowned?”

“I do, for one,” cried Fred, and dashing into the water he waded out to where the poor dog was half-standing, half-lying, among the choking weeds. Yes, the water was deep; but stretching out his arms he contrived to catch hold of the poor animal, and he quickly waded back to shore amid ringing cheers from all the people who had now gathered on the bank to watch the plucky lad. And whose was the dog? Nobody knew; it seemed, indeed, to have no owner and no home. But Fred and his companions carried it back with them to the school, and, after having told their tale, they begged the head master to keep it for himself. As Dr. Williams could not discover anything about the dog's ownership, he did keep it. So Fred's brave deed not only saved the animal's life, but procured a good home for it as well.
