In states where there are smaller populations each electoral vote may represent more people than a larger state's electoral votes, therefore each electoral vote represents more people in a smaller state. This gives the smaller and larger states a more equal representation of the country. The electoral votes of each state is decided by the popular vote of that state. For example, if Vermont has 48% of the popular votes for the Republican party but they have 52% of the popular votes for the Democratic party then the electoral votes of Vermont will be for the Democratic party. Without the Electoral College the election would not have a true representation of the entire country. The reasoning behind this is that states with a larger population will dominate the majority of the votes for president.
