Reread “The Conversation of Birds" and find where the title occurs in
the story. Why do you think the author chose this phrase for the title? the conversation of birds by jean yoon

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

n the poem, the birds of the world gather to decide who is to be their sovereign, as they have none. The hoopoe, the wisest of them all, suggests that they should find the legendary Simorgh. The hoopoe leads the birds, each of whom represents a human fault which prevents human kind from attaining enlightenment.

The hoopoe tells the birds that they have to cross seven valleys in order to reach the abode of Simorgh. These valleys are as follows:[2]

1. Valley of the Quest, where the Wayfarer begins by casting aside all dogma, belief, and unbelief.

2. Valley of Love, where reason is abandoned for the sake of love.

3. Valley of Knowledge, where worldly knowledge becomes utterly useless.

4. Valley of Detachment, where all desires and attachments to the world are given up. Here, what is assumed to be “reality” vanishes.

5. Valley of Unity, where the Wayfarer realizes that everything is connected and that the Beloved is beyond everything, including harmony, multiplicity, and eternity.

6. Valley of Wonderment, where, entranced by the beauty of the Beloved, the Wayfarer becomes perplexed and, steeped in awe, finds that he or she has never known or understood anything.

7. Valley of Poverty and Annihilation, where the self disappears into the universe and the Wayfarer becomes timeless, existing in both the past and the future.

Sholeh Wolpé writes, "When the birds hear the description of these valleys, they bow their heads in distress; some even die of fright right then and there. But despite their trepidations, they begin the great journey. On the way, many perish of thirst, heat or illness, while others fall prey to wild beasts, panic, and violence. Finally, only thirty birds make it to the abode of Simorgh. In the end, the birds learn that they themselves are the Simorgh; the name “Simorgh” in Persian means thirty (si) birds (morgh). They eventually come to understand that the majesty of that Beloved is like the sun that can be seen reflected in a mirror. Yet, whoever looks into that mirror will also behold his or her own image."[2]:17–18

If Simorgh unveils its face to you, you will find

that all the birds, be they thirty or forty or more,

are but the shadows cast by that unveiling.

What shadow is ever separated from its maker?

Do you see?

The shadow and its maker are one and the same,

Saturday with Einstein

by Mona Gedney

1

I knew very well that I was making a mistake when I agreed to attend the meeting with Kristina and Joel. I do not particularly enjoy belonging to clubs; I greatly prefer doing things with only a few friends or even just spending time alone. Still, they are my best friends, and I do like our town, so I agreed — very reluctantly — to go.

2

We live in Mount Dora, which is the proud possessor of one high school, one middle school, two elementary schools, a well-used library, a thriving downtown district, and a handsome new community center. It was the new community center that had created my problem. The director had decided that sponsoring a service club for teens would be a splendid idea. It was my misfortune that the director is Kristina's very enthusiastic aunt. And so it was that I, along with approximately two dozen other misguided souls, attended the organizational meeting for the Dora Do-Gooders. I had explained to Kristina that I would attend the first meeting as a show of support for her aunt but that under no circumstances would I commit myself to doing anything more than that. Therefore, I was stunned to receive an e-mail from Mrs. Maguire that thanked me profusely for signing up to be a part of the first major undertaking of the club, an entire Saturday devoted to service projects for citizens who needed help.

3

I glared at Kristina reproachfully throughout our first-period Spanish class the next morning. She had responded to none of my calls or texts nor my outraged e-mail, and this morning she studiously avoided meeting my eyes, doubtlessly glad that the alphabetical seating arrangement meant that she was across the room from me. I also noticed that she had entered class at the last possible moment — and that Joel was also trying to catch her eye. I grinned a little at that.

In "To Build a Fire" (131), the protagonist (main character) has no name. He is referred to as "the man." Why do you think Jack London did not name this character? Think about the importance of setting in this story when you answer the question.

Answers

Answer:

Since there is no other human character in "To Build A Fire", Jack London had no need to give his protagonist a name.

Explanation:

London must have had additional reasons for not providing him with a name. One reason could have been that he wanted to illustrate the insignificance of human beings in contrast to the grandeur and power of nature.

How can Filipinos change their colonial mentality

Answers

Answer:

by tedaing this

Explanation:

An intro to Colonial Mentality and its effects on the Filipino-/American community, in recognition and celebration of Filipino American History Month. We acknowledge that there are many terms to describe the community: Filipinx/a/o, and have chosen to use “Filipino” in this resource.

On her flight back home from visiting my auntie in Canada, my mom looked up from her plane ticket to find that she was sitting next to a man who she had an inkling was also Filipino. She was eager to talk to him. After a bit of small talk, my mom was able to casually sneak in the question: “Pilipino ka ba?” (Are you Filipino?). To her delight, she found out that he was actually from Ilocos, her and my dad’s home province in the Philippines. Naturally, she started speaking to him in Ilokano. What was odd was that even though he clearly understood what she was saying, he continued responding back to her in English. Thinking he would be more comfortable speaking in Filipino (the national language of the Philippines), she changed dialects. He continued to respond in English. Confused, my mom asked him how long he had been in the States. She wondered, “Maybe he’s been away for so long that he’d just forgotten how to speak the language?” To her surprise, he responded “6 years.” My mom, who had moved to the States when she was 16, had been living in the US for nearly 35 years. She admitted that she had lost some of the vocabularies, but that there was no way the man on the plane could have forgotten how to speak both languages. As she was retelling this story to me, I could see the recounted look of annoyance and disappointment on her face. She asked, “Did he think he was better than me because he was speaking in English?”

I think of this story often whenever I think of colonial mentality and its effects on the Filipino-/American community. First colonized by Spain for nearly 300 years from the 1560s to the 1890s, then Japan during World War II from 1941-1945, and then the US from 1898-1946, (in addition to the fact that the Philippines is an archipelago with each island and peoples having its own culture and identity), it is without saying that the Philippines’ culture and identity is difficult to grasp and define. (Let alone our history, which for the most part wasn’t recorded during the periods of colonization.) The uncertainties of what do and do not define our culture after having been colonized for so long have created colonial mentality, which has generated feelings of otherness and shame toward our identity and ultimately ourselves.

What is the ever changing evolution of the universe's current predicament State?

Answers

Answer:At a particular instant roughly 15 billion years ago, all the matter and energy we can observe, concentrated in a region smaller than a dime, began to expand and cool at an incredibly rapid rate. By the time the temperature had dropped to 100 million times that of the sun’s core, the forces of nature assumed their present properties, and the elementary particles known as quarks roamed freely in a sea of energy. When the universe had expanded an additional 1,000 times, all the matter we can measure filled a region the size of the solar system.

At that time, the free quarks became confined in neutrons and protons. After the universe had grown by another factor of 1,000, protons and neutrons combined to form atomic nuclei, including most of the helium and deuterium present today. All of this occurred within the first minute of the expansion. Conditions were still too hot, however, for atomic nuclei to capture electrons. Neutral atoms appeared in abundance only after the expansion had continued for 300,000 years and the universe was 1,000 times smaller than it is now. The neutral atoms then began to coalesce into gas clouds, which later evolved into stars. By the time the universe had expanded to one fifth its present size, the stars had formed groups recognizable as young galaxies.
