Who elects the President of the United States? A. The Electoral College B. The Speaker of the house C. The popular vote in the general election

Answers

Answer:

A

Explanation:

The electoral college elects the president of the united states

A) the Electoral college

Tho the vote by the general public heavily influences the decision made by the electoral college, the popular vote does not, in and of itself, dictate the outcome of the election

The only time the speaker of the house would have say in the outcome of the election is if neither candidate achieved 270 electoral votes, in which case it would be considered a “tie” and the decision would be left up to the House of Representatives. Even still, the only way the speaker of the house would decide the president would be if there was then another tie within the house and if the speaker was then the tie breaking vote. The only election to ever have ended up in the hands of the House of Representatives was the election of 1800

In every other election, the electoral college was the governing body that elected the president

He was the eldest son of a wealthy cotton manufacturer, Robert Peel (1750–1830), who was made a baronet by William Pitt the Younger. The younger Robert was educated at Harrow and at Oxford, and, with his father’s money, a parliamentary seat was found for him as soon as he came of age, in 1809.

As an able government supporter, Peel received appointment as undersecretary for war and colonies in 1810. Two years later he accepted the difficult post of chief secretary for Ireland. There he made his reputation as a skilled and incorruptible administrator, and, at the end of his Irish secretaryship, he was marked out for early promotion. He had also distinguished himself as the ablest of the “Protestant” party that resisted the admittance of Roman Catholics to Parliament, and in 1817 he gained the coveted honour of election as member of Parliament for the University of Oxford. Though declining immediate office after his return from Ireland, he was made chairman, in 1819, of the important currency commission that brought about a return to the gold standard.

In the 1822 ministerial reconstruction pursued by Robert Banks Jenkinson, 2nd earl of Liverpool, Peel accepted the post of secretary of state for the home department and a seat in the cabinet. His first task was to meet the long-standing demands in Parliament for a radical reform of the criminal laws. He then proceeded to a comprehensive reorganization of the criminal code. Between 1825 and 1830 he effected its fundamental consolidation and reform, covering three-quarters of all criminal offenses. Rising crime statistics convinced him that legal reform should be accompanied by improved methods of crime prevention. In 1829 he carried through the Metropolitan Police Act, which set up the first disciplined police force for the Greater London area. As a result of Peel’s efforts, the London police force became known as Bobby’s boys and later simply as bobbies.

When George Canning succeeded Liverpool as prime minister in 1827, Peel resigned on the issue of Roman Catholic emancipation. He returned to office under Arthur Wellesley, 1st duke of Wellington, early in 1828 as home secretary and leader of the House of Commons. Differences with Wellington led to the resignation of several followers of Canning after only four months in office, which thus considerably weakened the government. This was followed by the Catholic crisis of 1828–29 that grew out of the renewal of the Irish movement for emancipation in 1823 with the formation of the Catholic Association. Its growing strength culminated in the victory of Daniel O’Connell, the Irish “Liberator,” at a by-election for County Clare in 1828. Convinced that further resistance was useless, Peel proffered his resignation and urged the prime minister to make a final settlement of the Catholic question. Faced with severe opposition from the king and the Anglican church, Wellington persuaded Peel in 1829 to remain in office and assist in carrying through the policy of concession to the Catholics on which they now bo

A hush fell over the crowd as Samir approached the stage; he took a deep breath and tried to still the tremble in his hands. He had rehearsed the speech for days, practicing late into the night when the house was quiet. The night before, he had been putting the finishing touches on the speech when his mother snuck up the stairs and stopped by his bedroom door with a mug of tea. It looks like you will need this. Hows it coming? She tucked the long end of her sari under her leg and sat on his bed. The familiar smell that reminded him of trips to India tickled his nose as he took the warm mug from her; he pressed it to his lips and took a long sip. I dont think theyre going to understand it. Its okay if they dont understand it in their brains; its more important that they feel it here. She pressed her hand to his heart. Practice it one more time, and then you need to get some sleep. He stared at the words that he had painstakingly crafted to tell the story of how his parents had immigrated to the United States from India. Even though he hadnt been born at the time, he could feel the heat on their skin as theyd packed up their belongings in Mumbai and boarded the plane for their new lives. After a twenty20-hour flight, they landed in the chill of Chicago; they hadnt brought enough heavy clothes with them and had to buy sweatshirts from the airport store before stepping out into snow for the first time. His mother had danced around in the swirling white like a fascinated child, tasting flakes on her tongue before the cab whisked them away to their new lives. He didnt know how his parents got by in those early days of loneliness and isolation, when they didnt know their neighbors and couldnt find their favorite spices or flavors in the local grocery store. He imagined his homesick mother making pungent curry in the tiny kitchen of the apartment that was their first homecurry that she didnt share with anyone except her husband because he was the only person she knew. Eventually they had made a life there, and one year after theyd brought Samir home as a newborn, his younger sister Aarti was born, and they became a family of four. Each year that his parents lived in Chicago, they spoke about Mumbai like it was more of a memory. Samir grew up hearing stories of Mumbai and taking summer trips where he heard his parents speak a language that was clumsy on his own English-speaking tongue. He couldnt imagine leaving his life and moving herefar away, but he knew that his parents had done it for him and his sister. It was the ultimate sacrifice, his mother had said, but it was worth it. When he had finished rehearsing his speech for his mother, she dabbed her face, and he knew she was crying. He didnt need to ask how the speech washer expression told him that it was perfect. Samirs thoughts came back to the present moment as he cleared his throat and stepped onto the stage in front of the entire middle schoolhis friends and teachers were all here. He had often felt different from his peers and wanted so much for them to understand his story. But looking out into the crowd at all the different faces he realized that his peers must have their own stories to tell as well. Perhaps they wanted to be understood, too. He realized the only way to be understood is to share those stories. Perhaps if he shared his own story, others would share theirs, too. Perhaps it would help them to understand one another.
