Question 2

Read the following article.

The Automobile and Its Impact

For most Americans, not a day goes by that they are not affected by cars. The automobile has had more of an impact on American life than any other mode of transportation. The automobile has changed where people live, how people work, and how people view one another.

In the early 20th century, people who worked in cities had to live in those cities. People lived in crowded apartments with very little room for their families. When the automobile became available to the masses, people were able to move outside of cities to live. The automobile is what led to the growth and development of the suburbs. People began building homes on the outskirts of cities. Soon these places became communities with roads, police stations, and restaurants. This helped create jobs in those areas. People could choose whether they wanted to drive their car to work in the city or closer to home. Either way, this choice and way of life would not be possible without the automobile.

Cities were not the only areas affected by cars. The invention of the automobile helped increase farm production and distribution. Before the invention of the car, farmers used horses to travel. They were limited to only traveling 15–20 miles. Now, with cars and later trucks, farmers could deliver their products many miles away. This meant that more people could buy their products, and the farmer could earn more money. This also meant that people could enjoy produce that was not locally grown. Cars did not only have positive impacts on American society. The invention of the car created a new class system for Americans. In the early 20th century, only the wealthy were able to own cars. Over time, cars became status symbols. Some cars were created simply as a symbol of wealth and class. That is still the case today. Cars have also created more pollution. The gasoline that cars need to run has negatively affected the air. The more cars there are, the more polluted the air becomes.

The invention of the car has changed how people live in both positive and negative ways. This cannot be said for any other mode of transportation. Although ships and planes have made travel more convenient, they have not impacted a person's everyday life in the same way as cars.

Select the statement that best describes the author's point in paragraph four.

Cars helped farmers move their crops to new places.
Cars also had a negative impact on American life.
Cars helped create the suburb.
Airplanes are more important than cars.
Thank you!

Read the excerpt from The Riddle of the Rosetta Stone.

Before the Rosetta Stone was discovered in 1799, no one knew how to read Egyptian hieroglyphic writing. Its meaning had been lost for almost 1400 years. But countless visitors to Egypt over the centuries had tried to decipher the mysterious symbols. This is the story of their attempts, and of how the Rosetta Stone finally enabled scholars to unlock the Egyptian past.

The story begins in the seventh century A.D., when Greek scholars visiting Egypt first called the symbols "hieroglyphs." They gave them that name, which means "sacred carvings" in Greek, because they found so many of them on the walls of Egyptian tombs and temples.

Which phrase from this excerpt best supports the author’s view that the people who deciphered the Egyptian writing system played an important role in history?

A) no one knew how to read Egyptian hieroglyphic writing
B) countless visitors to Egypt over the centuries had tried
C) The story begins in the seventh century A.D.

nitial reactions to trauma can include exhaustion, confusion, sadness, anxiety, agitation, numbness, dissociation, confusion, physical arousal, and blunted affect. Most responses are normal in that they affect most survivors and are socially acceptable, psychologically effective, and self-limited.

Children who have experienced complex trauma often have difficulty identifying, expressing, and managing emotions, and may have limited language for feeling states. They often internalize and/or externalize stress reactions and as a result may experience significant depression, anxiety, or anger.

How to make a solar oven?

Here are the basic steps to make a simple solar oven:

Gather materials: You will need a cardboard box (such as a cardboard moving box), aluminum foil, plastic wrap, and glue or tape.Insulate the box: Line the inside of the box with aluminum foil to help retain heat, and then cover the outside of the box with several layers of plastic wrap to help keep the heat inside.Make a reflector: Cut a piece of cardboard to the size of one of the box's flaps. Cover the cardboard with aluminum foil, and then glue or tape it to the flap.Create an opening: Cut a small opening in the top of the box, and cover it with plastic wrap. This will allow sunlight to enter the box and be trapped inside.Cook your food: Place your food in a dark-colored, heat-safe container inside the box, and position the reflector to direct sunlight into the box. Leave the box in direct sunlight for several hours to cook your food.
