Part A

In "Caline," how does Caline feel after she has been in the city for a week?

She is pleased because she likes her new job.

She is nervous because she doesn't like her new job.

She is upset because she realizes that she craves love, not life in the city.

She is angry because the people in the city look down on her.
Question 2
Part B

Which evidence from "Caline" best supports the answer in Part A?

"For she knew now that it was not the great city and its crowds of people she had so eagerly sought; but the pleasant-faced boy, who had made her picture that day under the mulberry tree."

"Caline liked it very well, for it was pleasant, on Sunday afternoons, to stroll with the children under the great, solemn sugar sheds; or to sit upon the compressed cotton bales, watching the stately steamers . . ."

"And again when she questioned Caline the girl turned away, and went to sit behind the big, yellow cistern, to cry unobserved."

"When the woman asked her again after another week if she were still pleased, she was not so sure."

Answers

After living in the city for a week, Caline in the movie "Caline" is upset because she understands that she wants love, not city life. Hence, Option C is correct.

When the woman questioned her again after another week if she was still delighted, she was not so sure. This quote from "Caline" is the evidence that best corroborates the response in Part A. Hence, Option D is correct.

What is the theme of "Caline"?

Love at first sight is the central subject of Caline. Young adult living with her parents is the primary character, Caline. She went to the train tracks one day to meet some city residents. She observes as a lovely young man exits the train while she is waiting beneath a mulberry tree.

Therefore, Option C is correct for part A and Option D for part B.

Read “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost. Which statement best describes the main idea of the poem?
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
A. The speaker informs the reader about two roads.
B. The speaker expresses his feelings about nature.
C. The speaker describes his unfulfilled dreams and wishes.
D. The speaker explains a difficult decision he had to make.

What I learned reading about Zitkala-Sa's was that Zitkala-Sa felt isolated at her school as an outsider among white people and her urges of rebellion and revenge represent the despair and anger of all Native Americans under white oppression in her time. What surprised me was how the story was able to affect the readers in a way that they could empathize with the struggles that she had to go through because of the fact that her people's territory was completely overrun.

THE MATCH

There never was a time when the world was without fire, but there was a time when men did not know how to kindle fire; and after they learned how to kindle one, it was a long, long time before they learned how to kindle one easily. In these days we can kindle a fire without any trouble, because we can easily get a match; but we must remember that the match is one of the most wonderful things in the world, and that it took men thousands of years to learn how to make one. Let us learn the history of this familiar little object, the match.

Fire was first given to man by nature itself. When a forest is set on fire by cinders from a neighboring volcano, or when a tree is set ablaze by a thunderbolt, we may say that nature strikes a match. In the early history of the world, nature had to kindle all the fires, for man by his own effort was unable to produce a spark. The first method, then, of getting fire for use was to light sticks of wood at a flame kindled by nature—by a volcano, perhaps, or by a stroke of lightning. These firebrands were carried to the home and used in kindling the fires there. The fire secured in this way was carefully guarded and was kept burning as long as possible. But the flame, however faithfully watched, would sometimes be extinguished. A sudden gust of wind or a sudden shower would put it out. Then a new firebrand would have to be secured, and this often meant a long journey and a deal of trouble.

In 1827, John Walker, a druggist in a small English town, tipped a splint with sulphur, chlorate of potash, and sulphid of antimony, and rubbed it on sandpaper, and it burst into flame. The druggist had discovered the first friction-chemical match, the kind we use to-day. It is called friction-chemical because it is made by mixing certain chemicals together and rubbing them. Although Walker's match did not require the bottle of acid, nevertheless it was not a good one. It could be lighted only by hard rubbing, and it sputtered and threw fire in all directions. In a few years, however, phosphorus was substituted on the tip for antimony, and the change worked wonders. The match could now be lighted with very little rubbing, and it was no longer necessary to have sandpaper upon which to rub it. It would ignite when rubbed on any dry surface, and there was no longer any sputtering. This was the phosphorus match, the match with which we are so familiar.

What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
Early matches were dangerous and awkward.
John Walker made the first match.
Phosphorus was the key to the modern match.
Walker's match was better than what came before.
