What is the authors attitude towards status in the necklace?
For the most part, the author remains detached, and through writing down the simple thoughts and feelings of Loisel, allows the readers to decide for themselves how they feel about Loisel. If you read closely, you can not a tone of sarcasm however, a tone of insult, one of dislike towards the woman. Take for example, this passage:
"She had no dowry, no expectations, no way of being known, understood, loved, married by any rich and distinguished man; so she let herself be married to a little clerk."
Here we see Maupassant exaggerating Loisel's "misfortunes" a bit; his straightforward telling of her thoughts, that she felt she had absolutely nothing, and that absolutely no one loved her, makes her sound petty, whiney, and childish. He could have said, "she had few expectations, a small dowry, was not every well known, understood or loved," but instead he uses the dramatic "no, none" to describe her plight. This exaggeration is probably not true; however, Maupassant's describing it that way reflects how Loisel feels about it, and reveals her petty nature. She is like a child throwing a temper tantrum; Maupassant doesn't soften her petulant attitude one bit, but tells it exactly how she feels it, which is in selfish and self-pitying terms.
So, even though Maupassant appears to stay neutral by revealing her thoughts as they are, it is that open and honest revelation of her selfishness that helps us to see her as a selfish and ungrateful woman. It's hard not to feel that the author felt the same way about her, and used that tactic to reveal her childishness. I hope that those thoughts helped; good luck! o.o =p XD >.< =_=

Does the ending of Fahrenheit 451 feel fulfilling? Why or why not? Is the ending a deux ex machina (where the author suddenly saves the day with something that feels a little too neat, that doesn’t totally go with the logical build-up of the book)? Is the ending happy, sad, or a mixture?
What feelings are you left with for Montag and his society? What do you think happened to Faber? Do you think Montag and the outcasts’ plan for saving books is realistic?
Answer:
Explanation:
Most of Fahrenheit 451 focuses on the vices and negative tendencies of human nature that mades Montag's society so dark and miserable. So it is nice that at the end of the novel, there is a ray of hope. If you look at only the events of the ending, it still might seem quite cynical and depressiong; Montag's city has been decimated, his wife killed, Faber has suffered an unknown fate, Clarisse is gone, and everything that Montag ever knew or loved was destroyed. That's not a very happy picture.
However, if you look closely at the plan that Granger outlines, and the story of the phoenix that he uses, there is a ray of hope and optimism. Granger describes how according to legend, the phoenix, a bird,
"every few hundred years he built a pyre and burnt himself up...but every time he burnt himself up he sprang out of hte ashes, he got himself born all over again."
This story relates to Montag's society; it has crumbled and burned, and these men, these outliers, are going to be the ones to go back and rebuild everything. Granger says that as they rebuild, this time, they are going to rebuild things right so that they can stop making all of the same mistakes.
So despite the dramatically depressing ending, Bradbury takes the ashes of Montag's society, and asserts that a brighter, better world can be built out of them, and Montag will be one of the people who helps to do that. That is the feeling and hope that lies at the end of the novel.
