There is nothing more disenchanting to man than to be shown the springs and mechanism of any art. ALL OUR ARTS AND OCCUPATIONS LIE WHOLLY ON THE SURFACE; IT IS ON THE SURFACE THAT WE PERCEIVE THEIR BEAUTY, FITNESS, AND SIGNIFICANCE; AND TO PRY BELOW IS TO BE APPALLED BY THEIR EMPTINESS AND SHOCKED BY THE COARSENESS OF THE STRING AND PULLEYS. In a similar way, psychology itself, when pushed to any nicety, discovers an abhorrent baldness, but rather from the fault of our analysis than from any poverty native to the mind. And perhaps in aesthetics the reason is the same: those disclosures which seem fatal to the dignity of art seem so perhaps only in the proportion of our ignorance; and those conscious and unconscious artifices which it seems unworthy of the serious artist to employ were yet, if we had the power to trace them to their springs, indications of a delicacy of the sense finer than we conceive, and hints of ancient harmonies in nature. […] I must therefore warn that well-known character, the general reader, that I am here embarked upon a most distasteful business: taking down the picture from the wall and looking on the back; and, like the inquiring child, pulling the musical cart to pieces.

What message is the author trying to convey through this figure of speech?

A. The author thinks analyzing any art can be compared to taking a machine to pieces.
B. The author thinks machines are more meaningful and complex than literature.
C. The author thinks literature is more meaningful and complex than machines.
D. The author believes all artistic endeavors are overly complex and a waste of time.

Answers

Answer and Explanation:

I have used all the words and phrases given in the instructions. Feel free to change anything:

Two long time friends, Raj and Rohit, decided to join a camp and experience some time away from civilization, noisy cities, and pollution. They were excited about the idea of being immersed in nature, counting on their survival skills and instincts. One morning, they went out together to explore the surroundings and ended up getting lost. Checking their bags, they found no compasses or anything they could use to find their way back. The more they walked, the more they felt stranded. Away from the camp, their cries and shouts could not be heard by anyone, except for wild animals. And, indeed, Raj and Rohit soon heard a “thump thump” sound approaching. Their hearts beating fast, they watched as a large elephant came closer and closer. The animal trumpeted angrily, as if it was distressed by their presence and wanted to scare them away. The two friends were unable to move, afraid the elephant would chase them in case they tried to run away. As the elephant came towards them, Raj suddenly remembered Rohit had brought a balloon in his bag. Raj recalled asking his friend why he had brought such a useless item along, but now he realized the balloon could actually save them. He asked Rohit for the balloon and immediately started blowing. Soon, he had a big balloon, its rubber as thin as paper, ready to pop. Raj hit it hard with his hand – “bang” – and the loud noise scared the angry animal. The elephant turned away, and Raj and Rohit left out a breath of relief. Not long afterwards, some people from the camp found and saved them, taking them back rapidly.

Commencement Summary on Steve Jobs

On June 14, 2005, Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple computer and Pixar animation studio, delivered a very strong and powerful commencement speech to the graduating class at Stanford University. During Job’s fifteen or so minute speech, he told three separate stories. The first story consisted of his childhood and how he developed his education in an oddly fashioned way. Jobs quoted it as “The first story is about connecting the dots” (Jobs). Now the second story was about love and loss. Love and loss explaining how he was fired after the finest Macintosh computer was produced and sold. The third and final story jobs told was about death. Jobs were diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer than was later told he was on his death bed with basically no cure for it. But death was not getting in-between his career and his life for the Apple and Pixar companies. Steve Job’s commencement speech back in 2005 was inspirational for the young adults out in the world that do not have the money to afford college and to not stop pursuing their dreams.

The main idea in Job’s commencement speech at Stanford University was to show the newly graduated students how a man with little money pursued his dreams to become one of the wealthiest men in the world. He explained all the obstacles in life and what he went through himself. For example, in the first story Jobs spoke, he talked about how he was adopted by

Reread this passage fromThe Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and ask yourself what theme in the novel is supported by the passage.

Benjamin, once he left the hospital, took life as he found it. Several small boys were brought to see him, and he spent a stiff-jointed afternoon trying to work up an interest in tops and marbles--he even managed, quite accidentally, to break a kitchen window with a stone from a sling shot, a feat which secretly delighted his father. Thereafter Benjamin contrived to break something every day, but he did these things only because they were expected of him, and because he was by nature obliging.

Which of these statements expresses a theme that is supported by this passage?
A. The physical changes caused by aging often lead to changes in a person's goals and expectations.
B. A person's physical appearance affects the way he or she is understood--or misunderstood--by other people.
C. What society expects a person to do has a stronger effect on behavior than personal preferences or desires.

What's an independent possessive

An independent possessive does not precede a noun, as in "It is my pencil", but stands alone: "It is mine". The independent possessive is only used when the possessor is a person.

Explanation:

Answer:

An independent possessive is an independent possessive that does not precede a noun, as in "It is my pencil", but stands alone: "It is mine". The independent possessive is only used when a possessor is a person.

Explanation:

Mine, ours, yours, his, hers and theirs are the independent possessive pronouns. They are not immediately followed by a noun. You can think of them this way: they are independent because they don't need a noun after them.

Possessive pronouns show that something belongs to someone. The possessive pronouns are my, our, your, his, her, its, and their. There's also an “independent” form of each of these pronouns: mine, ours, yours, his, hers, its, and theirs. Possessive pronouns are never spelled with apostrophes.

Examples:

My phone is dead. Pass me yours.

Did you know that Labrador is mine?

The house on the corner is theirs.

Do you notice that all of the possessive nouns are at the end? That means it is an independent possessive.

Rule 1b represents the answer to your question

Rule 1a. Use a colon to introduce an item or a series of items. Do not capitalize the first item after the colon (unless it's a proper noun).

Examples:

You know what to do: practice.

You may be required to bring many things: sleeping bags, pans, utensils, and warm clothing.

I want the following items: butter, sugar, and flour.

I need an assistant who can do the following: input data, write reports, and complete tax forms.

Rule 1b. A capital letter generally does not introduce a word, phrase, or incomplete sentence following a colon.

Examples:

He got what he worked for: a promotion.

He got what he worked for: a promotion that paid a higher wage.

Rule 2. Avoid using a colon before a list if it directly follows a verb or preposition that would ordinarily need no punctuation in that sentence.

Not recommended: I want: butter, sugar, and flour.

Recommended: I want butter, sugar, and flour.

OR

Here is what I want: butter, sugar, and flour.

Not recommended: I've seen the greats, including: Barrymore, Guinness, and Streep.

Recommended: I've seen the greats, including Barrymore, Guinness, and Streep.

Examples:

I want an assistant who can do the following:

input data

write reports

complete tax forms

The following are requested:

Wool sweaters for possible cold weather.

Wet suits for snorkeling.

Introductions to the local dignitaries.

These are the pool rules:

Do not run.

If you see unsafe behavior, report it to the lifeguard.

Did you remember your towel?

Have fun!

Rule 3. When listing items one by one, one per line, following a colon, capitalization and ending punctuation are optional when using single words or phrases preceded by letters, numbers, or bullet points. If each point is a complete sentence, capitalize the first word and end the sentence with appropriate ending punctuation. Otherwise, there are no hard and fast rules, except be consistent.

Rule 4. A colon instead of a semicolon may be used between independent clauses when the second sentence explains, illustrates, paraphrases, or expands on the first sentence.

Example: He got what he worked for: he really earned that promotion.

If a complete sentence follows a colon, as in the previous example, authorities are divided over whether to capitalize the first word. Some writers and editors feel that capitalizing a complete sentence after a colon is always advisable. Others advise against it. Still others regard it as a judgment call: If what follows the colon is closely related to what precedes it, there is no need for a capital. But if what follows is a general or formal statement, many writers and editors capitalize the first word.

Example: Remember the old saying: Be careful what you wish for.

Rule 5. Capitalize the first word of a complete or full-sentence quotation that follows a colon.

Example: The host made an announcement: "You are all staying for dinner."

Rule 6. Capitalize the first word after a colon if the information following the colon requires two or more complete sentences.

Example: Dad gave us these rules to live by: Work hard. Be honest. Always show up on time.

Rule 7. If a quotation contains two or more sentences, many writers and editors introduce it with a colon rather than a comma.

Example: Dad often said to me: "Work hard. Be honest. Always show up on time."

Rule 8. For extended quotations introduced by a colon, some style manuals say to indent one-half inch on both the left and right margins; others say to indent only on the left margin. Quotation marks are not used.

Example: The author of Touched, Jane Straus, wrote in the first chapter:

Georgia went back to her bed and stared at the intricate patterns of burned moth wings in the translucent glass of the overhead light. Her father was in "hyper mode" again where nothing could calm him down.

Rule 9. Use a colon rather than a comma to follow the salutation in a business letter, even when addressing someone by his or her first name. (Never use a semicolon after a salutation.) A comma is used after the salutation in more informal correspondence.

How does walter represent the ABCs at the end of the film?

Answers

Answer:

At the beginning of the film, Walter Mitty shows the ABCs through his imagination. Only through his imaginary self, Mitty personifies a dominant male character, who is not afraid of facing danger. For instance, while on the phone with Todd, Mitty imagined he saved people from a building about to explode. In his imagination, he jumped from the train station to the building, through a window, and evacuated everyone. Another example was where he confronted his cruel boss, contrary to his real-lifesubmissive character. He fought him in the elevator and was not afraid to stand up to his boss, no matter the consequences. The last example of Mitty showing the ABCs was when he imagined himselfin a relationship with Cheryl Melhoff. He pretended to impress her in his imagination
