Lines 218–239: What central piece of content does the author select for her ending? Does Noda explain the meaning of the nursemaid? If so, how? How does this folk song relate to Noda’s mother?

Story: Growing Up Asian

Answers

Answer 1

In lines 218-239 of "Growing Up Asian," the author selects the folk song "Mamurogawa Ondo" as the central piece of content for her ending. The song is about a nursemaid singing to a baby, and the author explains that this song was one of her mother's favorites.

Noda does not explicitly explain the meaning of the nursemaid, but it can be interpreted as representing the mother's love and nurturing of her child. The nursemaid's song is a lullaby that comforts the baby, and similarly, the mother provides comfort and care for her child.

The folk song relates to Noda's mother because it was one of her favorite songs, and she often sang it to Noda when she was a child. The song holds sentimental value to Noda, as it reminds her of her mother's love and the happy memories they shared together. Overall, the selection of this folk song as the ending piece adds to the nostalgic and emotional tone of the essay.

Yes, Noda does explain the meaning of the nursemaid; she describes the nursemaid as a devoted caregiver who takes care of the children and the house with utmost dedication. The folk song is significant because it relates to Noda's mother and her experiences as an immigrant. The song symbolizes her mother's love, sacrifice, and determination in providing a better life for her family in a foreign land. It also highlights the challenges faced by immigrant mothers and showcases their resilience and dedication to their families.

In "To Kill A Mockingbird," the phrase "It's not time to worry, yet" is used to convey a sense of false reassurance. A specific moment when it becomes evident that the time has come to worry is during Tom Robinson's trial.

Full Question ;

Hammerin’ Hank

When Henry “Hank” Aaron was a young boy growing up in Mobile, Alabama, in the early 1940s, he played sandlot—or, vacant lot—baseball. He was very athletic and spent the long summers running, fielding, and hitting with his friends. Who knew that 10 years later he would be playing with the National Baseball League’s Milwaukee Braves?

Hank Aaron was one of the best baseball players to ever play the game. In fact, in 1974, exactly 20 years after starting his professional career, he broke Babe Ruth’s home run record. By the end of his 23-year career, Aaron had hit 755 home runs.

Aaron began his career playing shortstop in the Negro American League—an association of teams made up of African American players who had been shut out of white professional baseball. In those days, the life of a baseball player was hard. Players traveled a great deal, played many games, and earned very little money. Despite the many hardships, Hank Aaron continued to play.

After a short time in the Negro American League, Aaron was recruited by the Milwaukee Braves of the National League in 1952. He was assigned to minor-league teams, first in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, then in Jacksonville, Florida. In 1954, he gained a spot on the Braves’ major league team, thereafter playing mostly as an outfielder.

Aaron was consistently a great hitter, which in time earned him the nickname “Hammerin’ Hank.” When he played with the South Atlantic League in 1953, he had a .362 batting average. In 1956, he won the league batting championship with an average of .328, and in 1957, he led his team to victory in the World Series; he was named the league’s Most Valuable Player. By the time the Braves moved to Atlanta, at the end of 1965, Aaron had hit 398 home runs.

On April 8, 1974, Aaron hit his 715th home run, breaking Babe Ruth’s record, which had stood since 1935. On that spring day in Atlanta, the largest crowd in Braves history came out to witness the event. There were 53,775 fans in attendance, and Aaron did not disappoint them. In the fourth inning, he ripped an Al Downing pitch over the fence and into the Braves’ bullpen, where reliever Tom House caught it. As Aaron rounded second base, two college students appeared and ran alongside him before security stepped in. The new home run king was mobbed at home plate by his teammates.

After retiring as a player in 1976, Aaron became one of the first blacks in Major League Baseball upper-level management as Atlanta’s vice president of player development. Eight years later, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame—a mark of distinction Aaron could add to the many honors he had earned during his long, distinguished career.

- Include at least 3 quotes to support your points
- Make reference to the conventions of the ‘Gothic’ - the setting of the Red Room, Jane’s fears, the notion of the ‘ghost’

Answers

Charlotte Bronte evokes the feelings o the Gothic tradition by fostering a sense of unease, mystery, and foreboding that captivates readers and sets the stage for the unfolding narrative.

In Chapters 1-3 of Charlotte Bronte's novel "Jane Eyre," the author evokes feelings of the Gothic tradition through various elements such as the setting of the Red Room, Jane's fears, and the notion of the 'ghost.' These elements contribute to the eerie atmosphere and sense of foreboding commonly associated with the Gothic genre.

One way Bronte evokes the Gothic tradition is through the description of the Red Room. The room itself is portrayed as a dark and oppressive space, inducing a sense of claustrophobia and unease. As Jane describes it, "The room was chill because it seldom had a fire; it was silent because remote from the nursery and kitchens, solemn because it was known to be so seldom entered" (Chapter 2). This depiction of the Red Room aligns with the Gothic convention of utilizing gloomy and mysterious settings to create a haunting ambiance.

Furthermore, Jane's fears contribute to the Gothic atmosphere. Her dread of the Red Room is intensified by her belief in the presence of her deceased uncle's ghost. She confesses, "There was a room with a window... and that window was boarded up; sometimes, I saw a ghost" (Chapter 1). This fear of the supernatural aligns with the Gothic tradition of incorporating elements of the paranormal or the unexplained.

Moreover, the notion of the 'ghost' adds to the Gothic ambiance in these early chapters. The ghost symbolizes the haunting past and serves as a reminder of the secrets and mysteries lurking within the story. Jane's belief in the ghost contributes to the overall sense of tension and unease. As she states, "I thought a ghost would come... I tried to be glad that... I was left alive" (Chapter 2). This fear of the supernatural presence adds a layer of darkness and suspense to the narrative, characteristic of the Gothic genre.

In conclusion, through the evocative description of the Red Room, Jane's fears, and the notion of the 'ghost,' Bronte effectively creates a Gothic atmosphere in Chapters 1-3 of "Jane Eyre." These elements align with the conventions of the Gothic genre, fostering a sense of unease, mystery, and foreboding that captivates readers and sets the stage for the unfolding narrative.

Answers

B. Swift believes the landlords have taken advantage of the poor.

Jonathan Swift wrote and published an anonymous Juvenalian satirical essay titled A Modest Proposal For stopping the Children of Poor People From becoming a Burden to Their Parents or Country, and For making them Beneficial to the Public in 1729.

Swift expresses his growing annoyance in A Modest Proposal at the incompetence of Irish politicians, the hypocrisy of the wealthy, the tyranny of the English, and the dirt and depravity he sees so many Irish people living in.

He penned "A Modest Proposal" in an effort to persuade the Irish Parliament to better the living conditions of the underprivileged. Swift used the metaphor of eating children to allegorize how the poor were being taken advantage of, such as by landlords who charge exorbitant rent.
