In a manufacturing assembly line, products get larger and more complete as they pass along. Briefly explain how this compares to your digestive system.

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

Our digestive system does the opposite of an assembly line. Instead of getting complex and bigger, they are broken down into smaller pieces by mechanical and chemical processes in our digestive tract.

Explanation:

Food is first broken down mechanically in our mouths. Then chemicals in the stomach digest the food further. There also is mechanical digestion in this section of the digestive tract. As the food descends, more nutrients are absorbed in the intestines, in this areas the contraction of the muscles helps to move the processed food up to the end of the "assembly line" where the product is less complex than it used to be since the nutrients are now in our body.

StarChild Question of the Month for November 1998

Question:

What are the phases of the Moon?

Shuttle

Answer:

The Moon orbits Earth at an average distance of 382,400 kilometers. The lunar month is the 29.53 days it takes to go from one new moon to the next. During the lunar month, the Moon goes through all its phases. You can see the phases drawn in the image below. Just like the Earth, half of the Moon is lit by the Sun while the other half is in darkness. The phases we see result from the angle the Moon makes with the Sun as viewed from Earth. The diagram below on the right is one you typically see in books. Don't let it confuse you. The images of the Moon show what you see the Moon look like from Earth when it is at given points in its orbit. It does not show which side of the Moon is lit by the Sun. The side lit by the Sun is always the side that is pointed toward the Sun, as seen in the diagram below on the left.

Moon Cycle

Diagram looking down on Moon as it orbits Earth with Sun to right Cartoon of Moon-Earth Orbit, illustrating the phases of the moon. The

cartoon is labeled Moon-Earth-Sun as viewed from above our solar system. The

Earth sits in the center of eight images of the moon at different places in

the lunar cycle. To the right the Sun shines on the Moon Earth system.

We only see the Moon because sunlight reflects back to us from its surface. During the course of a month, the Moon circles once around the Earth. If we could magically look down on our solar system, we would see that the half of the Moon facing the Sun is always lit. But the lit side does not always face the Earth! As the Moon circles the Earth, the amount of the lit side we see changes. These changes are known as the phases of the Moon and it repeats in a certain way over and over.

At new moon, the Moon is lined up between the Earth and the Sun. We see the side of the Moon that is not being lit by the Sun (in other words, we see no Moon at all, because the brightness of the Sun outshines the dim Moon!) When the Moon is exactly lined up with the Sun (as viewed from Earth), we experience an eclipse.

As the Moon moves eastward away from the Sun in the sky, we see a bit more of the sunlit side of the Moon each night. A few days after new moon, we see a thin crescent in the western evening sky. The crescent Moon waxes, or appears to grow fatter, each night. When half of the Moon's disc is illuminated, we call it the first quarter moon. This name comes from the fact that the Moon is now one-quarter of the way through the lunar month. From Earth, we are now looking at the sunlit side of the Moon from off to the side.

The Moon continues to wax. Once more than half of the disc is illuminated, it has a shape we call gibbous. The gibbous moon appears to grow fatter each night until we see the full sunlit face of the Moon. We call this phase the full moon. It rises almost exactly as the Sun sets and sets just as the Sun rises the next day. The Moon has now completed one half of the lunar month.

During the second half of the lunar month, the Moon grows thinner each night. We call this waning. Its shape is still gibbous at this point, but grows a little thinner each night. As it reaches the three-quarter point in its month, the Moon once again shows us one side of its disc illuminated and the other side in darkness. However, the side that we saw dark at the first quarter phase is now the lit side. As it completes its journey and approaches new moon again, the Moon is a waning crescent.

Star Want another description of why the Moon has phases?

You can demonstrate the phases of the Moon for yourself by using a lamp and a baseball. Place the lamp with its shade removed in one end of a darkened room. Sit in the other end of the room and hold the baseball up in front of you so that it is between your face and the lamp. Now move the ball around your head at arm's length. Do this slowly and move your arm from right to left. As the baseball orbits your head, you will see it go through the same phases as the Moon.

What might happen if the
order of expression of the
highlighted Hox gene was
disrupted, moved, or changed by mutation?

Answers

Similarly, mutations in the Hox genes can result in body parts and limbs in the wrong place along the body. Like a play director, the Hox genes do not act in the play or participate in limb formation themselves. The protein product of each Hox gene is a transcription factor.

If the order of expression of the highlighted Hox gene was disrupted, moved, or changed by mutation, it would cause the replacement of a part of the body by a structure whose normal location would correspond to another site.

The differentiation of the limbs occurs during embryogenesis, thanks to the action of a group of specialized genes, called Hox gene.

This gene is involved in the developmental program that determines the location of organs along the anteroposterior axis.

These subdivide the embryo along the head-tail axis into cell fields with different developmental potentials, which will transform into limbs and other structures.

Hox gene mutations thus show that there are genes that can control the different regions of the genome that determine the structures of an organism.

These produce considerable anatomical transformations that, in the case of the fly, can consist of:

The formation of wings instead of halteres or legs.

An extra pair of wings where small appendages called stabilizers would normally be.

Therefore, we can conclude that if the order of expression of the Hox gene was disrupted, moved, or changed by mutation, it would cause the structures normally found in one body segment of the fly to be replaced by found in another segment.

Did the seized tusk come from one of the recently slaughtered elephants? ________ What evidence supports your finding?

Answers

Complete question:

Now you are ready for your first major assignment. Your colleagues are investigating a newly seized tusk and wonder if the tusk is from a recently discovered crime where 10 elephants from the same population were found dead with their tusks removed. The genotype of the seized tusk for five short tandem repeat (STR) loci is shown in Table 1. Allele names for each of the STR loci correspond to their size in base pairs (bp). Table 2 lists the genotypes of the same five STR loci for 10 recently slaughtered elephants.

Did the seized tusk come from one of the recently slaughtered elephants? ________ What evidence supports your finding?

Note: You will find the tables in the attached files

Answer:

Probably the seized tusk belonged to elephant number eight.

Explanation:

Potentially, the seized tusk might belong to individual number eight. In both the tusk and the elephant, the genetic analysis resulted in the same-sized alleles for each locus.

is this a question or?
Hurricanes create high winds and heavy downpours that can cause intense flooding in certain areas. It’s important to understand your flood risk if you live in a hurricane-prone area so you can take steps to be better prepared in case one strikes. Here’s a look at different types of flood hazards that stem from hurricanes and some tips to help you stay safe.

HOW DO HURRICANES CAUSE FLOODING?
There are a few ways a hurricane can create a high risk for flooding:

Storm Surge
According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), a storm surge is one of the biggest threats during a hurricane (or even a tropical storm). A storm surge takes place when strong winds from a hurricane push ocean water ashore. This creates an unexpected rise in the seawater level, above the predicted tide, notes the NHC.

While a storm surge is a threat to property, it can also put you at risk for drowning, the NHC says. This is because floodwaters can rise rapidly and with little warning.

Storm Tide
A storm tide happens when a storm surge takes place during high tide, says the NHC. A storm tide is the total height of seawater that comes ashore (calculated by adding the normal tide and storm surge water levels). A storm tide can result in water elevations that are much higher than a storm surge alone — in some instances, 20 feet or more, according to the NHC.

Heavy Rainfall
Torrential rains stemming from a hurricane or tropical storm can cause rivers, lakes and streams to flood within minutes or hours, says the National Weather Service (NWS). A slow-moving storm can also increase the risk of flooding, notes the NWS. This is because slow-moving storms allow rainfall to inundate the same area for an extended period of time.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR HURRICANE-INDUCED FLOODING
Beyond knowing the connection between hurricanes and flooding, it’s a good idea to educate yourself on some safety measures. That way, you can take steps to help protect yourself, your family and your home before a hurricane arrives. Here are some tips from the American Red Cross to consider:

Prepare Your Property

Clean out gutters and downspouts.
Install water alarms.
Safeguard important documents by making digital backups (and store the originals in a secure location).
Consider purchasing a flood insurance policy, which helps cover the cost of replacing or repairing your home and belongings after a flood. A flood insurance policy can take up to 30 days to go into effect, so it’s important to be proactive.
Prepare Your Family

Devise an evacuation plan that includes potential routes out of the area and shelter locations.
Create an emergency kit to take with you in case of an evacuation (include items like bottled water, food and batteries).
SAFETY TIPS DURING A HURRICANE OR FLOOD
When a hurricane is approaching, it’s important to know what you can do to help you and your family stay safe. Here are some tips from Ready.gov to keep in mind:

Monitor local radio and TV stations for weather reports.
Follow instructions and evacuation orders from local authorities.
Close any storm shutters on your home and stay away from windows.
Seek shelter in a windowless room on the lowest level of your home (one that’s least likely to flood).
Move to higher ground if a flood occurs (but avoid closed attics, as you may become trapped by rising water).
If you are instructed to evacuate, do so immediately, Ready.gov says. But, be sure to avoid driving or walking through floodwater. It only takes 6 inches of moving water to knock you down, or 12 inches of water to sweep a car away, adds Ready.gov.

Being prepared and putting some protective measures in place ahead of a hurricane or flood may help you stay safe if one strikes. Consider taking some steps to protect your home and your family now, and remember these tips in case a hurricane or flood occurs in your area.

Hope this helps

How do enzymes reduce the amount of activation energy needed to make a chemical reaction go?

Answers

Answer:

Enzymes reduce the amount of activation energy needed by breaking substrate molecules

Explanation:

Enzymes break down substrate molecules to lower the amount of activation energy required.

What is activation energy?

The least amount of energy necessary to bring atoms or molecules into a state where they may cause chemical transformation or physical transport is known as the activation energy in chemistry.

The differential of energy content between atoms or molecules in an active or transition-state configuration and the same atoms and molecules in their original configuration is known as the activation energy in transition-state theory. In mathematical formulas for values like the reaction rate constant, the activation energy is typically denoted by the symbol Ea.

Experimental rate constants or diffusion coefficients that are determined at various temperatures are used to calculate activation energies.

Therefore, Enzymes break down substrate molecules to lower the amount of activation energy required.
