Explain the meaning of carpe diem and tell how you could apply it to your own life. Each should be a complete paragraph (3-5 sentences).

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

Carpe diem is part of Horace’s injunction “carpe diem quam minimum credula postero,” which appears in his Odes, published in 23 BCE.

Explanation:

Carpe diem, a phrase that comes from the Roman poet Horace, means literally "Pluck the day", though it's usually translated as "Seize the day". A free translation might be "Enjoy yourself while you have the chance". For some people, Carpe diem serves as the closest thing to a philosophy of life as they'll ever have.

The earliest known uses of carpe diem in print in English date to the early 19th century. Robert Frost took on the subject with his poem “Carpe Diem,” first published in 1938. In it children are encouraged by a figure called Age to “‘Be happy, happy, happy / And seize the day of pleasure.’” By the 21st century the phrase could be found in the names of catering companies, gyms, and educational travel organizations.

O Both paragraphs are subjective, using emotional

paragraph 2 uses subjective language.
O Paragraph 1 uses subjective language, while

Answers

The statement which best compares the two paragraphs is (Option C.) Paragraph 1 uses objective language, while paragraph 2 uses subjective language.

Subjective refers to or is affected by individual emotions or viewpoints. In other terms, prejudiced means subjective. To be objective implies to be devoid of bias and opinions and to contain solely the facts. The first paragraph is factual. Each and every phrase provides provable facts rather than any views. However, the second paragraph is an opinion. The sentence contains the phrases "disappointing" and "irresponsible." These are just views because there is no way to know for sure whether or not anything is "irresponsible" or "disappointing."

Therefore, the statement which best compares the two paragraphs is (Option C.) Paragraph 1 uses objective language, while paragraph 2 uses subjective language. Subjective language makes use of individual viewpoints, feelings, and judgement. The goal of objective language is to present facts that can be compared to reality, or facts that anybody can notice.

Answer:

My personal favorite school subject is History. I enjoy learning about the past, and I especially enjoy learning about World War one and two. What I find interesting about World War one, is that during the same time the war was raging in Europe, there were resilient women fighting for the right for women to vote. This was known as the women’s suffrage movement. I admire them, and think they were very brave to be fighting for the rights for the women of America. While some people may think that the women were being impertinent to President Wilson (not showing him the proper amount of respect) I believe they were doing what they thought was right by trying to get his attention.

Women were also serving as nurses oversees in both the first and second World War. Being robust and caring to the numerous wounded men oversees provided a slight solace for many men. I love learning about both wars; however, World War II is my favorite. I enjoy learning about everything that happened with the Nazis. From the horrible actions of Hitler and the ominous concentration camps to the furtive efforts of the resistance movement. It is so amazing to me that even in a place of death, torture and destruction, the poor prisoners still found solace in the little things. For instance, getting a room with two beds for four people instead of one bed for four people.

Another point of interest for me is the attitudes of the American soldiers, no more than boys really. What war they looked at once as exciting, soon turned into horrible and traumatic. They would give anything to return to the frivolous activities that they once enjoyed back home. However, what I found interesting was even during bootcamp, many men still found solace in frivolous things such as scandalous images on taped to their barracks (which were taken down almost immediately curtesy of the irritable drill sergeants).

Overall, I believe both World War’s had significant impact on not only our lives, but the lives of every human being on this planet. I like to learn about history, because if you do not pay attention to history, it will repeat itself, and I have no interest of letting another full scale war happen again.

Consider these versions of The War of the Worlds. Excerpt 1, from H. G. Wells's novel The War of the Worlds: The common round the sand pits was dotted with people, standing like myself in a half-fascinated terror, staring at these creatures, or rather at the heaped gravel at the edge of the pit in which they lay. And then, with a renewed horror, I saw a round, black object bobbing up and down on the edge of the pit. It was the head of the shopman who had fallen in, but showing as a little black object against the hot western sun. Now he got his shoulder and knee up, and again he seemed to slip back until only his head was visible. Suddenly he vanished, and I could have fancied a faint shriek had reached me. Excerpt 2, from Howard E. Koch's script for Orson Welles's radio adaptation: PHILLIPS: Ladies and gentlemen, you've just heard Mr. Wilmuth, owner of the farm where this thing has fallen. I wish I could convey the atmosphere . . . the background of this . . . fantastic scene. Hundreds of cars are parked in a field in back of us. Police are trying to rope off the roadway leading to the farm. But it's no use. They're breaking right through. Cars' headlights throw an enormous spot on the pit where the object's half buried. Some of the more daring souls are now venturing near the edge. Their silhouettes stand out against the metal sheen.
